We
aim to equip pupils with the knowledge of their
cultural background and an awareness of the
various forms of expression thereof.
|
|
Culture is integrated into
the curriculum. Art and Craft and Music and
Drama lessons form part of the weekly timetable.
Boys also have the option of auditioning for the
choir, senior or junior, or the 'Merchie Mudrat
Band,' a small marimba orchestra. Some take
piano or recorder lessons during extra mural
time. During the year at least 4 cultural events
are organised which cover the broad spectrum of
our countries rich cultural heritage, ranging
from plays, musical presentations, storytelling
and much more. |
 |
|
There are many opportunities
for boys to become involved, by taking part in
productions and eisteddfods annually.
|
 |
Overall, we endeavour to
provide as many opportunities as possible for
learners to develop and gain confidence in their
communication, performance and presentation
skills and to derive enjoyment from these
activities. |

A new event on the Merchiston
Cultural calendar is the Merchiston Fest. This
was launched in 2007 for the first time. It
takes the form of a week long festival during
which pupils are able to view and participate in
cultural, musical, artistic and dramatic events
which take place in different venues in and
around the school. Some of the event include:
Visiting Productions, Drumming Workshops, Drama
Workshops, Choir Evening, Arts & Crafts
Exhibition and Poetry recitals by the pupils.

 |
|
 |
The annual Mudrat Market also
takes place at the same time, allowing the boys
to try out their entrepreneurial skills in an
"open market" atmosphere. Boys run stalls
selling foodstuffs, toys, crafts and many other
fabulous items as well as a number of
entertainment options. Parents and also pupils
from other schools are invited to attend the
market. |

The Merchiston Senior Choir
is well known and is often called upon to
perform at certain functions. At times the choir
performs special concerts at the local Old Age
homes in and around Pietermaritzburg. It
also participates in the local competitions as
well as performing at the school's annual
Prize-Giving Ceremony. |
